Nah - the thought that they may start conspiring to truncate our fun factor does not appeal to me.

I tried a beer but it tasted awful! Seriously, though...
I think they could support each other to yield benefits for us instead of conspiracy.
Case in point: I received a full set of titanium golf clubs complete with lightweight golf bag. But I don't play much golf at all! I already had a set of my father's used clubs that I wanted to practice on (and destroy) until I got decent. How could I tell my gf I didn't need clubs at all? I'm sure she spent between $1000-1500 since I bought my father the same set a while back!
I'd much rather have had an ECU chip instead. Or an orbital polisher. Or an audio upgrade (amps & speakers).
But how is she to know this? And which brand(s)? I don't talk to her about the specifics about my car interests - it would take way too long. She just knows it's fast and has quattro. She merely enjoys the aesthetics of the car, whether interior or exterior design.

Those motives seem clear to me. In my case, it all comes out of the same accounts anyway.
I usually make sure that I do something for my wife roughly in accordance with my expenditures on my car. So far it has worked to maintain domestic tranquility in spite of my habits 
This also has the advantage that I don't end up with parts that I didn't specify. I tend to be picky about my toys.......
