Default How common is the oil leak problem?

My '00 s4 developed a small oil leak shortly after 12k mi. I could see drops on the floor and under the tip tranny.

At first, the Dealer suspected the rear main seal, saying it was not uncommon. But the Mechaninic found the valve cover gaskets were leaking, so they replaced those and asked me to watch for any additional leaking.

I use synthetic oil. I wonder if that contributed to the leaking?

Default Re: How common is the oil leak problem?

Mine leaked from a seal on the engine block inside the oil pan. It took three tries to find it. I can't remember what the actual location is called but at first the dealership thought it was the rear main seal. They had to remove a lot of stuff to squeeze a little more goop onto one of the engine surfaces. I've seen somebody on the A6 forum with the same problem with his 2.7T.

I'll be switching to synthetic at the 10K service but
my past experience with Mobil 1 in my BMW M/C was that it found places to leak where it never did with dino. From what I've read on the forum stating the S4 factory fill is synthetic I doubt it would have contributed to your leak.
