Default if you feel vibrations when you brake, or they are too thin to *turn* (i.e. smooth)

probably don't need to be replaced on a 2002. Unless you warped them at the track.

Default grooves or just lines? are they noisey? you might need to "cut/turn" them.

i grooved mine soon after i got my car also, and i did it to the rear ones. don't think it was my driving. dealer "fixed" it under warranty. but usually problem comes back. you need to make sure they put on new pads and "seat/break in" them correctly. for more info STFA for how to break them in. good luck.

Default the brake light is indicative of low pad compound. Either that, or you are running...

low on brake fluid. Only the front pads have wear sensors I believe. Not 100% sure on the B6 A4 however...

dealership for new pads/rotors under warranty...

Default Could have been a rock in between the rotor and pad.

Its not that much for new rotors, I would suggest replacing them if you can.
