Default How to install your AWE boost gauge and make dinner at the same time...

OK, after 2 months of waiting for this damn thing, it finally arrived today. Here's the real life install process.

#1 Open box. Find grape blow pop. Look for 2nd blow pop, crap only have one. Pre-heat oven to 425 degrees.
#2 Assemble all needed tools (cough, cough, nudge, nudge. You know who you are...)
#3 Go out to car, try to pop out side vent. Can't get both sides out at once, one side pops back in all the time. Finally just grab the damn thing and pull it out. Drink beer.
#4 Try to remove center vents. Skin knuckle. Curse heavily. Dog comes over to see what happened. With a mighty tug, vents come out.
#5 Dog wanders over to neighbors yard. Fear impending dump on the neighbors lawn, drag dog back over to our house. Go inside and put frozen pizza into oven. Note time.
#6 Drill 12mm hole in side of housing. Hmm, 12mm, that's like 3/8", right? Obsess over the minuscle difference between 3/8" and 12mm, then just drill the damn hole. Of course can't get drill bit straight b/c of lack of room, so end up with an angled hole. Crap! Drink beer.
#7 Bundle wires and vacuum line together. Look around for rubber grommet. Can't find it. Go inside and find it on counter near pizza box.
#8 Try to push wires through 3/8" hole. They don't quite fit. Obssess over 3/8" vs 12mm measurements again. Get pissed off and shove bundle through 3/8" hole. Rubber grommet won't seat due to angled hole. Crap!
#9 Take off lower bolster under steering wheel. Notice I'm missing one 8mm bolt and one trim peice. Curse some more. Drink beer.
#10 Pop open hood. Take off plastic covers, pop off ECU box, chasity belt (hehe) and move ECU.
#11 Crawl under steering wheel and try to push vacuum hose up through hole. Realize vacuum hose is kinda like a limp peter, making it hard to push up through hole. Snicker some at my analogy, go get more beer to drink.
#12 Stagger out from under dash, pull vacuum line through hole, route through ECU box. Use x-acto blade to cut hole in rubber grommets.
#13 Route vacuum line through rubber grommets. Obssess over the best way to run line cleanly.
#14 Cut ****ty cloth covered vacuum hose on fpr, attempt to push supplied t-fitting into afore mentioned ****ty cloth covered vacuum line. Which proceeds to basically disintegrate. Remove EGR valve for more space. Crap!! Drink beer.
#15 Somehow manage to get t fitting into ****ty cloth covereed vacuum line, attach boost hose. Realize I didn't route the boost hose as cleanly as I could've. Crap!! Pull boost line off t fitting and re-route.
#16 Go inside and take pizza out of oven. Drink beer, eat pizza, watch Monster Garage. Man, are those guys lame...
#17 Using my wire crimpers (hint, hint)I take the loop terminals (hint, hint) and attach my ground and power wires. Drink beer.
#18 Again using my wire crimpers ($5 from Sears, hint, hint) I attach the male/female spade connectors (hint, hint) to the other end of the wiring and then neatly connect the wiring to the gauge. (Neatly! And reversible!)
#19 Dog notices neighbor outside with his two dogs. Dog decides she wants to rumble and bum rushs neighbors two dogs. Crap! Run over there, grab dog and order her home. Throw dog inside house. Dog's pissed.
#20 I then push the boost line onto the back of the gauge and insert the gauge into the center position of the cluster.
#21 I trim 3mm off the vent, and drill two holes in the bottom of the vent. Curse while attempting to thread zip tie through holes. Drink more beer.
#22 Finally get zip tie through holes, and cinch down boost line and wiring. Dog whines from behind door.
#23 Turn car on, gauge lights up and moves. vacuum reads 14hg, hmm, kinda low, even at 5000 ft above sea level. Seat in drivers seat and check sight line to gauge. Crap! Sight line sucks with gauge in center vent. Drink beer.
#24 Pop gauge out, see that zip tie I'd spent so much time threading through holes has already broken. The irony kills me. I drink more beer.
#24 Move gauge to drivers side vent on center vent and reinstall. Sight line much better, but no longer looks symmetrical. Obssess over my obssessiveness. Drink beer.
#24 Root around in my box of stuff on workbench and find left over silicone vacuum line from previous project. SCORE! Dance a bit, dog barks from behind door. Drink another beer to celebrate...
#25 Replace one side of ****ty cloth covered vacuum line with silicon peice. Don't think I can grab the other end attached under the intake mani, so rationalize that it'll be ok, right?
#26 Notice that I hadn't reconnected the EGR valve to the intake mani. Hmm, that's not a vacuum leak, right? Reconnect EGR valve. Curse myself for being a dumbass. Drink more beer.
#27 Put everything back together again. Notice I seem to have lost a screw for the ECU lid. Crap!!
#28 Go inside and eat grape blow pop.

Default I'm going to take huge BWW pics of my elec. tape ghetto install. I don't need no stinkin' crimpers.

And I didn't even get a damn blowpop! I did get a license plate frame, though, which I'm now sporting on my rear.

Rear of the car...

That writeup was hilarious, btw, especially the disintegrating cloth line. Thanks for all the nudges =P
