How much antifreeze do you need to prevent freezing?
I've been trying to diagnose my no heat problem and in the course of doing that, I blew a bunch of coolant out of the system. I refilled the tank with distilled water, and I put in about 1/2 gallon H2O. I have no idea what the original mixture was. Am I going to be ok, or do I risk cracking my block? I want to drive the car out of town tonight, where it will be left in below freezing temperatures (25 deg). Is there anyway for sure to know if it will be ok?
Also, interestingly, it seems that the water i put in hasn't really mixed. The coolant expansion tank is still mostly full of water even after running it (don't really smell coolant like you should). This concerns me because I have diagnosed my no heat problem to the fact that no coolant flows into or out of the heater core lines when the heater is turned on (i.e., it can't provide heat because it doesn't have any coolant going to it). This leads me to believe that coolant isn't circulating and that maybe the thermostat isn't opening. Would this mean that the coolant that was previously in the block is still there, just not circulating, and that the water that I added isn't going to do anything other than sit in the expansion tank?
Thanks.

It will list the mixtures and how they correspond to temperatures
on the side of the bottle.
Remember you want to be using distilled water (sounds like you are) and G12 (or G12+) coolant.
Time for a coolant flush!
