Default I can't believe there was such a big argument about EGT's a while back. Luckily,

as stock equipment we have these sensors. I do not have specs on it, but if they are thermo-electric, then the upper range on them is greater than a more linear and more expensive sensor available. Besides, after the turbo outlet manifold it is audi's safe and convenient way of monitoring this. If it were at the exhaust manifold collection, this would be closer to ideal, but as far as servicing goes, it's not.

you guys were arguing over the usefulness....It is TOTALLY useful for tuning as it acts as a good indication to the ignition timing and fuel input. As far as it NOT being useful???? No way. If the ECU can put a constraint on it's fuel/spark/wastegate control by reading EGT's, this is great. So actively using these egt inputs is a good idea on audi's part.

I don't think people should think once the exhaust leaves we shouldn't care anymore and that's it. There's some useful info in there.

Default Eric and Innovator are on the right track there...

EGT characteristics are a primary input for engine control on jet engines (I used to develop aero-thermal control logic for jet engines), and there is no reason why it wouldn't be just as significant on a turbo-charged IC engine. That other guy is ignorant, ignore his comments.

Default The EGT is in the exhaust manifold just prior to the Turbo!

thus in the optimum and correct spot!
