They were left over 2001 models.
So if only 400 got made (which sounds low) then it's because they didn't really make 02's at all. They just took some left over 01's, rebranded them, made some dinky improvements, and shipped 'em out to dealers to get rid of them. Ever notice how 2002 S4's don't have the same body has 2002 A4's? Case in point.
Audi doesn't limit production on all of its cars, but I know that the coming RS6 is definitely limited, mostly by how fast they can make them.
