Biggest reason is that it's a completely new configuration with all the components.

Default Just bought a new computer!!

I upgraded my old PIII 527mhz to a P4 1.8 ghz with 512 megs of DDR ram. Oh, and a 40 gig HDD

Problem is, I had to reformat my existing harddrive for some reason... anyone know why?

Default Nah, just a RAM-***** ;-)

Especially since it's so cheap...

well, it would have been cheap, except I had to get Registered ECC memory... even then it is still "cheap" :-)

New MoBo needs an f-disk/re-install. Just did mine 2 months ago.

Default next time might just want to try reinstalling windows

or upgrading to a newer version like XP... formatting the hard drive seems to be a bit extreme
