just got a used Touareg. I never thought I'd say this about a SUV... this thing is incredible!

Re: what year & options?
I got a 05 V8 with 21K miles for $29K. I specifically searched for non-VW dealers, drove some miles to get it and accepted the fact that I wouldn't be getting certified pre owned beyond the remaining factory warrantee. I'd rather save the money and spend it on my local shop who I trust 1000 times more.
It is loaded except for air suspension, cd changer and nav, but has every other option to my knowledge. I highly recommend the proximity sensors (my wife's favorite feature). Also the dark chocolate/beige interior is amazing but I don't know what it's officially called. It is in really good condition and the stereo is far better than my S4's Bose. The carpets and interior are in mint condition, there are only three things I found wrong: 1) key'd scratch along driver's side that you can see in the light, 2) missing logo center cap on alloy which I just ordered for $16, and 3) worn tires which I suspect were the result of severely underinflated tires. I couldn't have taken care if it better myself.
It was one of the cheapest V8's that I found and one of the most loaded at that. The V6 aren't that bad despite what everyone says, just get one that is 05 or 06 so you get 20hp more. But it's really hard to compare apples to apples on the V6's since many of them are a bit bare bones (e.g. listed as "leather" but in fact leatherette!). You can tell if it's manual seat adj.
