K04 Turbos on my B5 S4
OK, i know this has probably been done to death, but i can't seem to find anything when searching this forum !
All i want to know is are the k04's a direct swap, i.e turbo for turbo......keeping everything else the same ? I keep hearing conflicting stories on this one.
And also where to get a pair brand new ? I'm in the UK but i dont mind paying for postage

They are a direct swap on the Turbine side (Manifold & DP's), but ...
the compressor side Inlet of a real K04 uses larger diameter pipes. There is no adapter, so this means you at least need to replace 4 of the inlet pipes. That is usually done using parts from the RS4 (STFA for part no's).
So the answer is technically No - not 100% direct swap.
Imolavirus is currently making hybrid turbo's (STFA for group buy) : K04/K16 rev2's with K03 compressor housing around the larger compressor wheel, which would work with stock intake pipes.
There are also some hybrids using K03's
For all types (K03/K04/Hybrid), the compressor side outlet is basically the same, no plumbing changes needed there although the stock IC's are pretty pitifull.
As you are in UK you could contact VAG Parts, for all K04, RS4 parts - ask for Martyn. P.S. Ask for discount.
Most of the US tuners carry K04 kits, Zev at Avalon helped me find all my bits, even the impossible to get inlet pipes.
Otherwise there are usually some on eBay ~$1850 (stay away from seller : "audspeed") although I'd recommend sending them to proffessional to get them checked out.
Imolavirus checked my K04's (bought through Avalon) and found that the stock bearing was already busted, brand new, mint in box from from the KKK factory. Go figure.

http://www.vagparts.com</a

Re: They are a direct swap on the Turbine side (Manifold & DP's), but ...
thanks mate, i have been speaking to "Alan" at Vagparts, they've quoted me £625+vat for each turbo. They are the people that have said they are not a direct fit !

Having it be close to a direct fit was a design requirement of Audi ...
