Key locked in ignition on 2001 S4! Why?
Last night I was driving a 2001 S4 (not my car and the owner has no clue) and when I parked the car the ked was locked in the ignition. The things got the tiptronic trans (if it were my car it would have the 6 speed manual), it was in PARK I turned the engine off and the key would NOT come out of the ignition! I was driving in the tip mode and the auto mode. I turned the ignition on again and shifted through the auto gears and stuck it in the tip mode and back to PARK and turn the ignition off and still could NOT get the key out of the ignition. The cars owner tried unsuccessfully and said, "**** it! Let someone take it then I call the insurance company". He left and I gave it another shot by shifting the trans through the gears and turning it off again then the key did finally come out of the ignition.
So what's the deal, I'm I missing something? Or am I really stupid or what? The manuals at his home so that was no use!
00 Jetta GLX 5 speed

Re: Key locked in ignition on 2001 S4! Why?
That's a known problem with the S4 and, I'm told, other Audis (I'm not saying it happens a lot, just is not a one-off). Try searching the forums using "key stuck" or some such.
Some say to pull the silver button out (it can get stuck in a slightly depressed position); I had the same problem when I test drove my new '01. But everything I've heard and experienced indicates it can be corrected by a tech adjustment; mine has been fine since I got it.

Re: Try turning the steering wheel back and forth. Then remove key.
I did try turning the steering wheel back and fourth trick until it locked, it still didn't release the key. I also played with the silver button on the key fob, nothing happened. What did it was the 4th try running through the auto tranny gears. I did do a search on "Key locked in ignition" before my post but came up empty. Maybe it didn't did far enough.
Thanks for the info.
00 Jetta GLX 5 speed

i have the same problem.. it have to do with
the fact that you shift too fast from tip into parking mode.. and when you kill the engine.. the engine safety mechanism prevent the key from coming out(it is still thinking it is in drive)..
this is why.
it scare the **** out of me, and i am stuck in the parking spot for 1/2 hour. I call Audi, Audi Dealer.. and eventually audi emergency 24 hour.. and they all HAVE NO CLUE...
