Whacking the allen wrench pretty hard w/ plastic mallet. Should I just hit it harder or is there something else I'm supposed to do first?

Use a cheater pipe..
Slip a long pipe over the handle and stand on it. It's a VERY tight and stubborn bolt.
You'll also need the pipe to re-tighten the bolt.

Buy a quality set of Allen Sockets. Allen wrenches have their place, but a situation like this...
demands a good set of the sockets.
Best tool you can buy to work on these cars.
You can step that up to a 1/2" drive ratchet, and slap your cheater bar on there. Less likely to break, or twist off as well.
