Default M3 v. S4 debate...why bother?

I keep hearing back and forth about S4s and M3s...but why is there even a comparison? A) the M3 is hard as hell to get (I know people who've been waiting well over a year for one) B) the M3 is almost 10 grand more for a loaded car C) it's a coupe.

I mean, if I dropped an extra 10 grand into my S4, it could be over 400 horses, stiffer suspension, and would light any M3 on its best day. Or you could take $10,000 of parts out of the M3, and it wouldn't even move. Why are people all into this debate? Sure a lighter, more powerful, more expensive car with 2 fewer doors is gonna be faster, probably even more maneuverable.

If I wanna feel all big, I'm not gonna go race an IS 300 and feel all excited that I lit it up. So M3 people...if you really wanna race, wait till I drop 10 grand in my S4, and we can make it any time, any place

Default You see, it's like this:

There are two ways these debates get started (well maybe more than two but I'll discuss the main two)...

1) An E46 M3 owner (or an E46 M3 soon to be owner or an E46 wanna be owner...) comes onto the board and says "give it up! My car is gonna freaking SMOKE your car, you have no chance to survive make your time." Then the S4 people say "well so what it's more $$$" or "well my Stage 3 will kick your ***" and then the M3 folks rally back and it's like a racquet ball match or something.

2) An S4 owner says "I saw an M3 at a stop light and I (smoked, lost, ...) him." or "I saw an M3 at a light but he wouldn't play, WTF is with that *****?" or something. Same thing -- messiness ensues.

Add one or two of each of these a day, and add all the comments which are re-re-repeated each time... and it becomes 30% of all forum content.

Default My goal in life is to be able to afford a car that I think is cool bone stock. No warranty hassles,

no aftermarket parts that don't fit correctly or work as advertised. Picking an M3 over my S4 with $10k in mods is a no-brainer - you take the M3. If you don't mind having a modded car, go buy a 1990-94 AWD Eclipse, spend $3-4k and run low 12s, or buy a used Mark IV Supra spend $3-4k and run 11s. The reason these options do not sound good is because they are old cars that in order to run that fast are noisy and have "special handshake" auxiliary computers and such that make them a pain in the *** (not to mention unreliable). I love my S4, but any money I am tempted to spend on mods is going to go into a fund for another car.

Interesting. As a car enthusiast I always see ways to make a car better, except a 69 RS/SS convert!

Default Or better yet, a 4 door E36 M3 for 30k and a 10k Trubo kit for ~450hp... To each his own............

There is always a faster car out there, but hey I love mine just the way it is, sure I paid a few k more for it, but for me its worth it and I got what I paid for... Your S4 is a great car, you dont need to try to compare it to anything, its just fine the way it is, sure it will be a lot more fun with a chip but whatever, its still a great car stock, just diff. than the M3... IMO...
