Making the Vel. vs Time chart

Creating the chart w/ Excel.

1) Set up four columns under A,B,C,D with the respective labels; Time, TimeSqd, TimeCube, Dist

2) List the times recorded, in seconds, under the Time column. Distance in feet under the Dist column

3) Use Excel to create columns of squared and cubed times under the appropriate label

Time TimeSqd TimeCube Dist
0.0 0.0 0.0 0.0
2.2 4.9 10.7 60.0
6.3 39.1 244.8 330.0
9.6 92.4 888.3 660.0
14.8 219.8 3258.2 1320.0

4) Select the Regression tool from the Data Analysis package.

5) Input Y Range: this should be the Dist column, including the label

6) Input X Range: this should include the first three columns (Time, TimeSqd, TimeCube) with labels

7) Select the labels check box and New Worksheet Ply options

8) Click OK to generate data sheet

9) Plug the results into the following formulas

Dist = Intercept + Time * (t) + TimeSqd * (t) ^ 2 + TimeCube * (t) ^ 3

For this ex.
Dist = -1.09 + 14.35 * (t) + 6.86 * (t) ^ 2 - 0.12 * (t) ^ 3

Vel = Time + 2 * TimeSqd * (t) + 3 * TimeCube * (t) ^ 2

For this ex.
Vel = 14.35 + 13.71 * (t) - 0.37 * (t) ^ 2

Note: The distance formula isn't necessary.

10) Now you can create a new table with columns of Time and Velocity. Plug in time values (in sec) to the velocity equation to get the velocity at that point in time (in feet/sec. I multiplied that by 3600/5280 to convert to mph) Use the chart function to create the chart. I selected the smooth line function when plotting the data.<p>2001 S4
