Default MP3 Player For S4

Hey, has anybody installed an MP3 player in their S4 w/bose audio? I am looking at the 'Empeg' which holds about 20GB and is available in blue display to match the seates. I would go for the smaller 4GB model but honestly I can't fit all my MP3s on that!

The player is 6"x7"x2" so it is rather small. There will be much space left after the stock radio is taken out and the empeg put in so I have in mind to fill that space with some aluminum trim to match the rest in the car. Any ideas?

Oh if you are wondering the player costs about $2250 so wheels and tires are on hold, so is a carbon hood and a couple other upgrades I just cannot take the radio crap anymore! Thanks.<p><img src="http://www.geocities.com/missimola/js4.jpg">

Default I am working on that, using the CD changer input.

Check out these links.
http://www.stinger-aamp.com/peripheral/s-ind.htm
http://www.pie.net/index.htm
http://www.mp3kit.com/index.html

What I want to accomplish is plug a MP3 player into the CD changer cable in the trunk. Then ideally use the headunit to control the player but I would settle for using remote controls for the MP3 player. The Trackz player is close and can be remotely controlled but still pretty early in development.
The PIE protocol interface adapters may be made to communicate with the headunit but they have not tried to use them with other sources.
The Trackz MP3 player looks like the most cost effective idea right now.

The idea is to make it simplly plug n play, but it isn't that easy.
Take a look at this stuff and tell me what you think.

Default Re: MP3 Player For S4

you should check out the RomeMP3 player. you can play mp3s through your cassete deck. the player looks and is shaped like a cassete tape.

Default About the RomeMP3

The Rome sounds horrible IMO. It varies quite a bit on the player you put it in, plus it doesn't seem to respond to the ff/rew commands very well. I friend of mine has a EMPEG but I don't think its worth the money and IMO would destroy the console lines of the S4. Just make some mix CD-R's and load them up in the changer and you have around 7 hours of audio. I imagine by the time you get amps and new console piece fabricated your probably going to be in the 3500 range. Which could have gotten you a chip, exhaust, and a short shifter.

Default kenwood or aiwa mp3 based incar players are probably pretty good...

I think they are still on preorder @ crutchfield, i think jakeAK preordered the aiwa unit. IMHO, getting the empeg would be lame, since you would always have to transfer the music to the unit it self. With mp3cd based players it would be way easy, just take 9 mins to burn a mp3 cd and then you can pop that in your car mp3cd player and if you have an apex player you can use them at home. The way i play mp3s in the car right now is by using a laptop with a casette hookup. Not the greatest quality but hey mp3's arent the highest quality to begin with. I'm still waiting for the tests on the car mp3 players before i even think about hacking at my (soon to be here) s4.<p>_rl [1998.5 a4 2.8 quattro]

Default I like that approach - there would be a huge market, but...

As long as you are lurking in the trunk area - it might be productive to try and replace the electronics in the CD changer itself. If you could get the changer to continue reading and changing the disks while talking to the head unit and interpreting MP3's, you'd be way ahead of the game (I'm sure someone somewhere is working on this approach.

IMO, using RAM storage is still an expensive way to go when CD-R storage is practically free these days.

Maybe elements of an Apex could be combined with the changer mechanics and the head interface/electronics. My Apex unit simply consists of a cheapo IDE DVD player with a simple single ship decoder. I understand Apex is working on offering a car version of their product which will also incorporate a radio.

Default With cdr's being so cheap now, why not just burn an asst of ....

your favorite tunes on cd's? Different rippers make it incredibly easy and you can probably get extra trays for your changer that could be swapped in seconds if you get bored too quickly. That way you can keep the nice clean oem lines of your dash. Just my .02....

Default You don't understand! :)

I can't live with only 74:00 of audio on a CD. I have my MP3 CDs but 5 CDs is like 80 songs. I need room for 1,000+ and on CD that would be 60+ CDs. I converted all my CDs to MP3 so I could get the songs I want without changing CDs, so the actual MP3 player is the only option. Unless I could get something else hooked up to keep a stock dash. But where do I get a portable MP3 player that holds 4+ gigs? I'll keep looking, thanks.<p><img src="http://www.geocities.com/missimola/js4.jpg">

Default I'd go with the CD-R's too.

The quality of MP3 sucks. Just a step above analog. Don't like the compression.

just my opinion.
