My experience with the VW/Audi "Original" iPod adapter..
<center><img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/39658/radio.jpg"></center><p>(a.k.a. How to *really* get the Audi iPod adapter to work)
OK, first, don't anyone tell me that I should have just bought the ICELink, this was an impluse buy from the stealership, and I can return it.
So, picked up the adapter, took out the radio. Instructions say to reconnect 9 wires. did all that. Nothing. Can't select the CDC, iPod does nothing, *and* lost the radio readout on the console.
Have someone else check my wiring. Its fine. Plug in a different head unit. Same thing. Ok, I'm returning this thing..
Next day, decide to take another crack at it. Now, I found it interesting, that the 9th wire was in a different grouping on the radio connector, specifically the wire circled in red in the picture. so, I removed the wire, and plugged the original back in... And it worked! and then it didn't.. and then it worked! and then it didn't.. The reason?
Its a ground wire that kept hitting and moving away from the radio casing, occationally grounding it, and causing it to function! So, I connected it to the ground on the radio, and it all works now.
I just can't believe that the install manual was just plain old wrong. I dunno, maybe they didn't figure us B5S4 owners would want to connect one up.
But, its finally working, but having the controls locked out may be a showstopper. I use that too much.
See the Audi logo on the iPod was neat though!

when the ipod is connected the click wheel and all other inputs on the ipod itself are disabled
you can however disconnect it; navigate on the ipod itself to a different artist/album, whatever; reconnect it to the adapter and the head unit will play from that point(and disable the click wheel again).
granted it's a pain, but it's forced me to taylor my playlists more to this use.
also, it's convenient enough for a passenger to disconnect the ipod and scroll to find what they (and hopefully you) want to hear, then reconnect it. most of the time, if i'm by myself in the car i'm playing a sepcific album that i navigated to on the way to the car, or the entire library is on random.
