Default My James Bond story(long)

This happened two Thursdays ago. I usually work 1st shift but had to resolve some issues so I went in on 3rd Wednesday night(after an hour sleep). So anyway, I left work around 7AM Thursday morning from the KOP area. I'm sitting at a stoplight about an 1/8th of a mile from work and notice what I thought was condensation coming from the exhaust( outside temp guage was reading 5). I pull away from the stoplight and notice I can't see anything behind me due to the huge smokescreen my car is emitting. I go about another 1/8th of a mile and pull into Gateway shopping center and shut down. After a minute or two I start the car back up just to make sure I wasn't seeing things due to sleep deprivation. Sure enough, same huge smokescreen. I didn't hear any dentist drill sound so I figured I snapped a shaft on one of the turbo's. I called roadside assistance and thankfully they were there within the hour. Side note->Steel-toe safety shoes and near 0 degree weather don't mix. I get my loaner from Don Rosen and drive the 35 miles home. As I'm finishing my Yuengling Light Lager my dad calls. He needs me to pick up a lower radiator hose and some antifreeze for his Ram pickup. I get the goods, drive the 30 miles to his work and start repairs. Side note 2 -> Searching for a dropped hose clamp in a bucket of near 0 degree antifreeze is painful. Drive home, have another beer, go to bed. Two minutes later Dad calls from a local shop asking for me to pick him up. It wasn't the hose it was the water pump. Pick him up, drive home, pass out. Two hours later, wake up thinking it was a bad dream. Walk into the garage and am reminded by the KIA Optima loaner it wasn't a bad dream it was a bad day. Spend Friday replacing Thursday's memories with those of freinds, snowboarding, strip clubs, and bars. Tuesday Don Rosen calls and informs me it wasn't the turbo's- it was a bad PCV valve, check valve, and cracked accordian hose.
Number12, Number10 and the associated hoses in the picture below.

Sorry for the picture quality on the following-I was tired:

The one thing that concerns me with all this is the cats. I work in R&D for a catalyst manufacturer and I know the oil poisoned them to some degree. I wonder how long they will last... Sorry if this post seems pointless, but after reading through some of the archives I didn't come across this type of cause and effect. I.E. bad PCV valve=smokescreen. Usually it's bad turbo's=smokesceen

Default Great post. I wish this was here 2 weeks ago when I had the exact same problem here in cold NH....

I had the same smoke screen and my concern is my cats as well. It started one morning and I drove it for about 8 miles like that to the dealer. Do you think that would have killed the cats?

Default Shortened their life span a bit/decreased their efficiency

They are still working or your CEL light would come on. A couple of things happen when oil burns on the cats. 1) The phosphorus, molybdenum, and some of the other additives present poison active catalytic sites. They permanantly attach themselves to the platinum, palladium, and rhodium oxides which are then no longer free to react with the CO, HC, and NOx the engine is emitting. 2) Ash forms when the oil burns and clogs some of the active catalytic sites available. 3) The higher temperatures on the surface of the catalyst caused by the burning oil causes a change in the oxidation state of the platinum, palladium, and rhodium oxides which renders them useless. Sorry, I'm not sure how many thousand miles/years were taken off the life of both your and my cats. I wouldn't worry too much, some of the oil poisoned catalysts I've evlaluated were subjected to 50-200hrs of oil poisoning. I doubt you were anywhere near that. Hope things work out OK for you.
