Default Need help with removing axle bolt while front end is in the air

I started my coilover install and while drilling out the pinch bolt (in previous post) ruined the steering knuckle. I have both OEM spring/shocks out and both pinch bolts are out. I'm waiting on the passenger side knuckle and CA/TRE kit to come in the mail before I finish. I want to go ahead and take out the axle bolt (for removing the knuckle) but need advice on how to do it. I put one lug bolt into the rotor/hub to keep that from spinning and had my GF step on the brakes while I put a breaker bar on the bolt. The brakes couldn't hold the rotor/hub still. The key was turned to the accessory on position but the car was not started (was worried engine wouldn't get adequate oil with the front end up in the air). Am I going to have to install my front coilovers and put the wheels back on and put the car back on the ground? That's my last resort b/c I'm just going to have to remove them again after I do that. Will I get more braking power with the car actually started as opposed to just having the ignition to the "accessory on"? Will I damage the engine by starting it up with it lifted at that angle?

Default Try putting the car in 5th or 6th gear...

If that doesn't work, put the tire studs back on the brake rotor, without the tire, and get a *big* flathead screw driver. You can stick the flat head in the stop of the rotor and jam the rotor against the caliper.

Default Put the car in first gear, start the car, have you gf stomp the brakes....

stick a big screwdriver through one of the bolt holes so that it hits the spindle when the wheel tries to turn.

Being at an angle like that is no different than driving up a hill.

Default I would think you could put in the lugs w/o the tire and bottom them out against the hub.

If the wrong size lugs keep the car from moving with wheels on, won't the same apply to the correct lugs, but without the wheel?

Just a guess...and use as a last ditch attempt.

jam a screwdriver in the cooling fins, and it will hold it against the caliper

Default Put your nasty spare on and use a piece of wood....

...place it under a spoke pointing directly down to the ground. Any torque you put on the axle bolt will be transferred through the rim / wood to the ground. You get the benefit of the weight of the car tending to "hold" everything in place and not tending to push the car forward or backward.

Also, if GF is not around you can put a piece of ??? from brake pedal to seat. Proper length and adjusting seat position front to back will apply force to brake pedal. Obviously, you will want to protect your seat with something too. Take out the brake light fuse if you are going to be a while.
