Default New M3 scarcity, what a crock!!

I went to my 2nd different BMW dealer this week, and they both had unsold, available e46 M3's in the showroom. Not the "hideous" Laguna Seca Blue or the "I'd rather rip my own eyeballs out than have to look at" Pheonix Yellow, no they had a black one and a silver one. Neither car had a dealer mark up above invoice either.

2 months ago a salesman told me there was a 100 person waiting list at his dealership and they were only getting 27 of the cars a year. He said I might be able to get one in about 3 years.

I'm not trying to be a blind Audi fanatic here, but I'm still not convinced I like the looks of that new M3. It seems too muscle car looking, almost like some Saleen Mustang or something. There's no subtlety or classiness about the car at all IMHO. The last generation M3 looked sporty AND classy, this one is about as subtle and classy looking as a Viper.

Why am I going to BMW dealerships you ask? I have a 2000 A4 and want to UPGRADE to an S4 but, I can't buy the S4 in good conscience without at least test driving a used e36 M3.

Default true, they ARE nice. BUT YOU KNOW that in a year, everyone will have one,

eventually; seeing a new m3 will be like seeing an astro van, or a tauras.

not me, no thanks. Ill keep my skinny tires, and awd, and my ANONYMITY.

FLYING LOW, STEALTH MODE, BELOW RADAR. UN-PUNISHED!

Default Oh yeah, the paint quality is pretty poor too!

The amount of "orange peel" on the newer BMW's paint is really surprising too. Granted my Audi has a bit of orange peel in the paint, but nothing like the M3 I saw today. For $55,000 you'd think the paintwork would be top-notch!

Default Try Orange Peel on a Porsche. Even on a 996TT. But I do know someone

who refused to take delivery of his totally custom 996TT with a custom color job with orange peel.

Porsche agreed to repaint the car.

Default The dream is to have both a S4 and an E36 M3.

I debated many nights on a '98 Silver M3/4 vs the S4(Avant at the time). Still would like the M3 for weekend track work(too rough to drive ~100mi daily). Both are great but having come from BB Mopars in the drags the S4 is absolutely the undisputed road torque monster. You can pull away from just about anything with it.

You can keep the E46M. Nice car but ain't no 46 worth +50 large. Reality check people.

Default They were for sale on the showroom floor in S. Cal?

They were definitely charging over MSRP. No question.

Default Blame it on the German environmentalists

Crazy green party. Too bad their "friendly paint" ends up more on the ground they wish to protect than on the car!

Default I humbly disagree - It looks good, is classy and fast - just like the S4 they won't be dime a dozen

I still have the same opinion about the new M. If you live up north or in a rainy climate, S4 is it. If you live in FL or such, I would prefer the M... TEHO
