I found that the frontmost cylinder, #1, was the dirtiest, then #2, then #3 was the cleanest. Is this normal? Someone suggested rainwater, etc getting more in the forward ones? This is with 114k miles, year-round driving in New England, btw.
Dirty Cyl#1:

Cyl #2 was about half way between the two, on the dirty scale.
Clean Cyl#3:

Eww, wtf?
I'm at 4 years old/120k, don't have the best motor hygiene (can't remember the last time I washed it), it's not even remotely that dirty anywhere, but under the coilpacks is perfectly clean.

hmmmm.....how the hell did all that dirt get in there? I have 109,000 miles on my car.............
year round Chicago driving and I'm not sure there was any dirt in there.
The way the coilpack is bolted down, I don't see how that much crud could get in there.

Anyway, were your coilpack bolts tight? seals look good? Maybe a dealer messup and they tightened them later without cleaning?

believe it or not, it's unlikely that the dealer had anything to do with this...
I'm not sure if I ever had them change the plugs. I have changed them twice since 60k. I should have taken a shot of cyl#2 as it was really progressive how it was dirtier towards the front. Also, cly#1 had almost oil-like sludge in the dirt.
I guess I'll try to clean it real well ... unfortunately, I'm likely to change the coilpack at VW this afternoon, and put everything back together before my 70mi drive home. Then I'll have to take it all apart again to clean Geeze, I should get some new plugs and put them in while I'm at it

shenanigans ;P
Won't hurt much to put the coilpack in dirty, though the filth could be a cause of the misfires. I wouldn't pull the plugs until it was as clean as you can manage.
The oil in the sludge could be from your valve cover gasket, even so the dirt shouldn't be in there. Any coilpacks that you aren't replacing, double check the seals on them.
I'm guessing a non explosive degreaser and a wet/dry vac are going to be your best bet to get it clean.
Good luck, keep your cylinders clean :P
