Notchy shifting into 3rd... NASA, didn't you have this problem?
Seems like it might be getting worse, I might be going crazy, who knows. Anything I should try? I thought at first I wasn't pushing the clutch in far enough, but that wasn't it, kind of seems like it doesn't like me shifting into 3rd too quickly, but I shift into 2nd pretty fast. Standard problem? (I'm sure that's what my dealer would say)

yea...
My car was built with a bad 3rd gear synchro. I had the dealers look at it and they checked the shift linkage...checked the adjustment and replaced the clutch slave cylinder...didn't make any difference because it was a factory defective synchro.
Would usually grind when shifting into 3rd. Did it since I drove it off the lot but at first I chalked it up to new car...etc. Kept thinking I was doing something wrong.
Basically they have to replace the synchro.

they'll replace your tranny as a whole...
but you should start the process of getting them involved to be sure they don't pin it on you. It seems like generally people don't have too much problem with this but always good to get it in the works asap.
There IS a chance of a synchro failure which will leave you without a gear so it can be a big PITA if it happens when you're on your way to a meeting.

My whole take on these kind of issues is...
That work the machine until it falls apart, and you have to get towed. It may sound a bit inconvinient, but sure as hell saves a LOT of time "diagnosing" the problem.
They can't pull that "condition cannot be duplicated" crap if you tow her in.
So, my motto is carry a handy protable tool set, your stock ECU, bypass valves and stock shifter, and your'e good to go.
YMMV :-)

Re: yea...
Were you getting a real grind, or just some notchiness and a little hesitation? I ask because I have that problem with my car (some notchiness and a little hesitation), and I am bringing it in for 5k service next Monday.

Mine was like that from the day I got it...
Its better now but maybe 1/4 of the time the shift is a little gritty. It feels like its grinding but there's no sound of grinding. Very strange.
I'm going to get the dealer to look at it at my 5k service in a couple weeks. I think I have clutch issues too, my clutch engagement is a lot more sudden than other S4's I've driven. (My hope is that my s4d r0w1n sk1llz are because of a bum clutch, since I seem to be able to drive other S4's just fine...)
