Odd Grinding Noise...Only when cold & Only First Thing in AM
I have a '02 S4 Avant; bone stock with 41000 miles. Lately, when it is cool outside (55 f or less) and I start the car there is a grinding noise in the engine compartment. It emanates from the right side to the engine and last for 20 seconds or so. It does not happen on warn mornings and does not reoccur during the day on subsequent starts. A friend suggested that it could be the fuel pump. Any ideas? TIA

Not too much, since only the tiptronics have them.
but, I've been in my bosses allroad and heard it run..
It's there to inject air into the exhaust and help the catalytic convertors light earlier on cold starts, I'd guess the bearings must be dry or failing. No idea of how hard it is to pull out the pump. Or if it can be taken apart and serviced easily.
I'd open the hood before starting the car some cold morning, find where the noise is coming from and see if you can pull out the pump and take it apart or if it's a replace only thing.
PNs are
078906601D $202.35
06A959253B $323.80
Not sure which PN you need or what the difference is, I'd get whatever PN is currently on your pump or check with the dealer.
