Default Is the oil seal for the rear main seal flange part of the flange? The rear main seal on the 2.7t is

You've got the gasket, the flange, and a pressed (by hand not press) circular gasket that goes inside the flange. ETKA doesn't show the oil seal flange (the round part) being separate from the flange itself.

Do you order a new flange to replace the ring? Flange price is around $50, iirc.

7 is the ring
9 is the flange
10 is the gasket

Default ECS sells it with the seal/flange, or with seal/flange/gasket.

Default The flange and seal come together as a unit with installation tool

The gasket comes seperatly.

There is a plastic tool that spreads the seal so that you can slip it over the crankshaft without damaging it. I would not try replacing it without the tool. The tool used to come with the seal assembly. I have been told that recently they have been shipping without them.

If you try and install it without the tool you can damage the lip of the seal. You cannot see the seal going over the crankshaft because the felt oil ring blocks you view. You will not be able to see if the seal is seated correctly or has been damaged pushing it over the crankshaft.

Also do not grease the seal only use engine oil otherwise it could leak. Be sure to use enough RTV sealant and clean the surfaces really good. I used the OE Audi brand stuff just to be sure.

Default The only special tools bentley talks about are for the front crank seal not the rear. Do you know

the tool number or part number for the tool? I saw your earlier posts on this in the archives but never the resolution.

Default I know Bently does not mention it. Mike at Wicked Motor Sports told me about it.

I had a hard time finding one. The dealer who I bought my RMS from got one from one of his techs in the shop who had saved one. He gave it to me for no charge. He told me that he always thought that it was a packing piece to protect the seal during shipping. He is the parts guy that told me that they always used to be shipped with the RMS assembly, but that recently they were not coming through with them? He did not know why.

The part number on the tool comes up on their parts system as an invalid part number? All I can say is that I believe there is a high probability that you will gamage the seal when trying to get it over the edge of the crankshaft without the tool.

To make matters worse you can't see the seal after or during installation because the felt oil
ring blocks your view. I don't know how else I could have got the seal over the crankshaft without the tool to expand and protect the seal during the install.

As I said in the previous response the part number on the tool comes up as an invalid part number when the dealer searches the parts database. Although the part number looks like a valid Audi part number. The number will help you find one as there is more than one tool like this out there.

The first one I found locally at an Audi specialty repair shop was the wrong one. Maybe it was for a 4 cylinder or something.

The thing looks like a cheap white plastic cap about 3" in diameter and about 1/2" high. It slips inside the seal and expands it then the inside of the cap fits over the end of the crankshaft. This enables you to slide the seal in place over the end of the crankshaft. Then you just pull the tool out and the seal closes down on the crankshaft after it is in position.

I'll see if I can get the part number for you. I don't have digital camera....so it's not convenient for me to photograph it for you.

The dealer parts guy I got mine from is Bob Dawson at Criswell Audi in Annopolis,MD. He knows about the tool and the situation. Maybe Audi started shipping with them with the tool again?
