Okay, the city light saga has ended....
The install was very straight forward. You know, it always SOUNDS harder on paper. I knew it was probably easy, but I'm always intimidated by screwing around with a car that cost $40K. The VW, I've done all kinds of stuff to, and it's the same.
I would like to thank Mark P. for his pictures. In fact, my digicam died 4 pictures in, so I had to steal his to comment and make amendments/addendums to his instructions. These pointers are for doing the city lights ONLY, not the entire euro light install. The instructions only apply to those who want the city light to act as the parking light, thus DISABLING the corner lamp's always on status when the parking/headlight switch is in position 1 or 2. The corner lamps will act as blinking lights ONLY if you follow these pointers. Good luck, and be PATIENT! So here it goes: <img src="http://homepage.mac.com/jyoteen/.Pictures/citylightinstallins/citylightinstall1.jpg"> <img src="http://homepage.mac.com/jyoteen/.Pictures/citylightinstallins/citylightinstall2.jpg"> <img src="http://homepage.mac.com/jyoteen/.Pictures/citylightinstallins/citylightinstall3.jpg"> <img src="http://homepage.mac.com/jyoteen/.Pictures/citylightinstallins/citylightinstall4.jpg"> <img src="http://homepage.mac.com/jyoteen/.Pictures/citylightinstallins/citylightinstall5.jpg"> |
Nice pics! Glad things turned out great.
|
Thanks for your help as well.
|
Welcome. Just wished I had fancy pics to show everyone.
Like you said, pictures are worth a thousand words. Just sometimes you wanna get the mod completed so picture taking time is just a distraction.
|
good pics - what did you use for the harness connections at location 3 ?????
the AWE city lights kit had the yellow wires, but they also had these very tiny special clips which work as intended with the stock harness. they snap in and neever come out and create the contact between the wiring and harness... curious since i don't see them in your pics.
|
The AWE wiring harness is really a VW/Audi electrical connector...
I had one laying around (they come as a wire with the two ends with those special connectors). And I got two more "just in case" from a VW dealer at $1.80 each.

BTW, gotta give credit to Mark P. for his excellent writeup and pics (which I borrowed two of)
My digicam died, so I had to resort to stealing ;-)
I think Mark P's install is a bit different because he's using relays to do some fancy on/off switching, which I didn't need or want. |
ok thanks.
|
Do you write manuals for a living? :)
|
Do the city lights remain lit when the headlights are on?
|
yes.
|
DonP's setup uses relays that turn the city lights off when headlights are turned on (m)
isn't that how it works on euro S4s and RS4s? Nice write-up BTW.
|
Huh? Not me.
|
i think you mean MarkP?
|
Oh, so that's what Mark P's relay stuff does. I wasn't sure...
I just wanted to get corner light off, and make use of the city light which is more functional when the headlights are off than having the corner lamps on.
I didn't know what Mark P.'s setup did frankly, as I don't think he described what he was after. |
excellent writeup.. great bookmark!! :)
|
here's my understanding . . .
click 1 (Parking lights): City Lights On/Corners Off
click 2&3 (Low Beams): City Lights Off/ Corners On Blinkers, of course, in all positions. |
donp, MarkP, EdP.. all the same crazy tinkerers.. :)
