Of course the S4 Avant is at the top of my list, but in the interest of sparing bloodshed (my own!), the research continues on alternatives that cost less (although the S4 is down to around $41.5K). The WRX comes in at about $25K, and as stated yesterday, is damn fun but not exactly inspiring with regards to fit/finish and luxury. Today's inquiry is the new IS300 SportCross. With leather and sunroof it comes in at $35K. Probably not as fast as the Subie, but it's got to be nicer on the inside, right?
The other options are to get one of the new A4 Avant 3.0 (220hp) which should be in the mid $30's. Or maybe chip an A4 1.8T Avant? Any other wagons I'm missing? Jetta w/V6? Or maybe drop a W8 into a Passat All-motion?

don't automatically expect a Lexus to have nice interior...
I thought the IS300 interior was almost on par with the Subaru interior... cheap looking, cheap feeling.
If you can wait, you might want to try to get a Passat 4-motion since it too has a torsen diff like the Audis. I believe the next Passat will have the W8 as an option, but no idea on pricing for that.
Overall, you really can't beat the looks of the A4/S4 Avant body style, not to mention the materials and build quality.

and that chrono-style dash...
is really annoying to me. As far as looks, I find the WRX most goofy, IS sportcross a little better, and A4/S4 by far the best. It just hurts to get a $35K loan...especially after 3 years of no car payments at all.

The T5 S70 Volvo is very nice, it was my 2nd choice to the Avant
I really like my Avant with Tiptronic but I also really liked the S70 T5 with its version of tiptronic. Two different beasts.
I think the Volvo would be a better daily driver. It has more room, better on gas, plastic on the bumpers to protect from scratching. Its only FWD but that's ok IMHO.
