Picked up some Pentosynth 5W-40 tonight. Been running Mobil 1 0W-40
for a few years, but the place I get all my filters had some of the Pentosin stuff....we'll see how it does. Anyone else run this stuff?

I can't recall exactly what the owner's manual says, but the B5 S4 factory oil was
definitely synthetic due to whatever the weight that was quoted was/is only available in a synthetic. Some have suspected the factory oil was German Castrol Syntec. Pentosin makes the G12/G12+ coolant and the tip tranny fluid. They are a prime supplier to VAG, thus likely Pentosin oil came in some VAG cars, if not the B5 S4. A lot of the engine problems Audi and VW have had are due to the fact that these cars require synthetic oil to be used in Germany, while AoA deemed dino was OK cause it saved them $ on the included maint. and what did they care if your engine blew up if overall they came out $ ahead?

This was and is a subject of great debate. Some say the factory fill is special non detergent . . .
some say it's special high detergent.
I don't know why it's so difficult to get this info.

I was told by several factory Porsche and Audi technicians about this on both Coasts.
As far as I am concerned, I have no reason to doubt them. As for what did the car came with from factory, it was believed to be synthetic 0W-30 for the 2001 S4s, at least that's what I remembered from back then.
At that time, Mobil 1 0W-40 was not yet avaliable and the 0W-30 were already extremly hard to find off the shelf. I still remember people, including myself, were buying them from a Porsche dealership in Texas that was selling them.
FYI, attached to this post is a link to Pentosin.<ul><li><a href="http://www.pentosin.com/shop_produkt.php?c=213,224&pid=612">http://www.pentosin.com/shop_produkt.php?c=213,224&pid=612</a</li></ul>
