my patients - he was trying to plug an exhaust leak with exhaust tape with the family van on a floor jack (NOTE: NO JACKSTANDS).

The van fell onto him - he was found not breathing, resusitated and flown by helicopter to the regional med center. Came off the ventilator and is now in a rehab facility with an unknown amount of brain damage.

The story really hit home since I take care of the kids.

I haven't heard anyone say it lately, so I'll say it:

NEVER USE A FLOOR JACK IF WORKING UNDER THE CAR - no matter how tempting it is to do a "quick" fix - get the damn jack stand in there!

<jumping off my soapbox now>

Default That's unfortunate...

It's a shame that something so simple could have prevented this, but hopefully there is someone out there that will learn from this. Just remind yourself "it's not worth it" everytime you're tempted to wander under the car w/o a stand in place.

I feel safer with Rhino Ramps than with jackstands. Is that unreasonable?

Default Sorry to hear that. Even with stands, make sure that all 4 legs are on the ground...

I had a jackstand collapse once when I was taking a wheel off of a full-size van. I had two jackstands under the rear axle. The one jackstand was not sitting perfectly on the ground, and the two legs with the most weight gave out. I just managed to jump out of the way. Luckily for my legs, the wheel stayed on the hub, even though all the lug nuts had been taken off. Be carefull guys.

Had my old avant fall on my hand once, not cool. Needless to say, I'm very careful now.
