I test drove both, and bought the S4 Avant.
If the Passat had been offered with both 4Motion and a 5-speed, I might never have gotten around to test-driving the S4.
I have not yet tried a W8-powered Passat. (Are they available yet?) If the Passat wagon had been available with the W8, 4Motion, a manual transmission, and a sports suspension when I was car shopping, that is probably what I would own today.
