question about tire width: Would a Racing slick like a hoosier r6 be wider than a street tire
mounted on the same rim using the same tire size?
I had a set of wheels made and they mounted a hoosier slick in the size i want however it looks a little wide and i was wondering if i put a street version of the same size tire on the rim, it might not be so wide. Is this true or is a 275 tire width the same across all tires regardless of make and performance type?

no... the short simple answer is it's SUPPOSED to be an absolute measurement... the long answer is..
yes, 225's from different vendors with different designs are often different widths, the thing to remember is that the measurement is supposed to be the treadwidth, and how a tire mounts on the rim, the type of lip on the tire, etc etc can all change it's over all width The width of the rim can also change the profile of the tire mounting.
To be fair though, there should not be a MAJOR difference, racing slicks are almost always wider in my experience (R compounds too) and i am not sure if this has to do with meeting tire regulations for specific classes (i.e. making a "225" that is actually 245 wide would make it a very popular tire)...
tires are like chicks, not all C cups are the same size ;P

I have Hoosier R6 in a 225 size for Autox, they are darn close to rubbing the upright
on the stock wheels and ride ht. True race slicks seem to run on the wider side from what I have seen.

Hoosiers run wide. I run them and Goodyear race tires as well - and the hoosiers are a good
half-inch wider each compared to the Goodyears even though they're "the exact same size".
Your mounted Hoosiers are certainly wider than other tires of the same size. Bridgestones can also run a little wide - but Hoosiers more so than any other tire I've used (Khumo, Goodyear, Bridgestone, Yokohama, and Hoosier)
Different tire manufacturers measure their section width's and tread widths from different points on the tire - results are non consistent from one brand to another.
Your best bet is to go by the specs tire rack publishes - then you can compare to some extent.
