Question: is a Bypass valve the same as a diverter valve?

Yeah except a By pass valve recirculates instead of venting to the atmosphere

Default Actually, I found that my local dealer parts dept...
...didn't know what a "bypass valve" was. Audi parts docs call it a recirculation valve. Just a tip for those dealing with the local parts guys. 8^)

Diverter valve recirculates as well....blow-off valve does not.
