Quick Comparison
Hi Folks,
Just wanted to give my quick 2 cents. I just sold my 968 and leased a 2001 S4. I have no intentions on modifying the car and I leased it because of its performance, size and warranty.
On paper, the 968 has similar, but slightly lower power/performance numbers than the S4. On the road, I also see similar performance in terms of acceleration. The quattro really helps at the start. I do feel a little lag with the S4 especially when cruising on the highway. Sixth gear in the 968 is much more responsive than 6th in the S4.
The 968 doesn't roll as much in the turns and feels slightly more grippy in the turns. On the flip side, the S4's ride comfort is much better than the 968. The front seats in both are fairly comfortable.
For me, the big difference is that the S4 can carry four passengers and I will never have to pay for repairs or maintenance on my S4. I spent about $3000/year in maintenance in addition to the money spent on expected items such as oil, pads, rotors, etc.
The 968 is a great car - especially on track and autoX. But it is a difficult car to have as your daily driver if you don't have an additional backup car. That's why I chose the S4 and I'm very happy with the decision.
My only complaint is that I don't receive as many return "flashes" from other S4s on the road like I did from other Porsche owners on the road with the 968.
