Quick, how many quarts does the 6MT tranny take?

DM-S4 01-31-2007 09:02 AM

Are you kidding? I'm getting mixed answers from the archives

S4andTLS 01-31-2007 09:05 AM

2.3Liters

S4gasm (LoTR) 01-31-2007 09:07 AM

2.3 liters

Toy_Guy 01-31-2007 09:16 AM

Sorry about that......6.9 quarts

DM-S4 01-31-2007 09:27 AM

Hmmm............

I had this from the past, which I assume means one of these applies to our tranny as well:

yeah well according to audi manuals it is 2.3...interesting.

Mark P 01-31-2007 09:44 AM

Here's where I originally posted that....

some good info in that thread

https://forums.audiworld.com/s4/msgs/1933347.phtml</a

Mark P 01-31-2007 09:45 AM

And after I filled, here was my post.....

Ryan, btw the tranny and rear diff fluid swap went well. 2qts rear, 3qts tranny (of resp. fluids)

S4gasm (LoTR) 01-31-2007 09:53 AM

interesting, well wouldn't you just put fluid in until its full?

or are you not supposed to fill it to the top?

Mark P 01-31-2007 09:57 AM

basically, I would...

I guess the proper height is something like 1mm below the fill hole (fill hole is on side of tranny). However, it's been posted that there's a divided chamber in the tranny that not all fluid will enter when you fill it. Supposedly the filling spec states to drive the car, then top off afterwards. Since many don't do that, it's probably at least best to fill it till it pours out.

I feel like the last time I filled my tranny (which was separate from the car), we tilted it after filling and sure enough the fluid level went down when we leveled it again, suggesting the rear area does indeed exist. Perhaps DAP recalls that better... DAP?

DAP@EPL 01-31-2007 10:00 AM

We did indeed observe that on your trans. I think the recommended procedure is to...

fill until it spills out the fill hole, close everything up and drive around the block to distribute the fluid and then top off as necessary.

If you have the trans out as we did, just tipping it back is probably sufficient.

And FWIW, when I did mine, I simply filled it until it came out and then closed everything up.

No subsequent top off.

Has been fine for the past 30k miles.

And it also says that it should be filled to 7mm +\- 1mm below bottom lip of filler hole.

Hal_TT::CBP 01-31-2007 12:45 PM

Fill on 100% level ground, 7mm fluid level from bottom of hole is what the OE specs are.

I don't know what happens if you fill to the hole but there is a big warning section on the instructions that these trannys are very sensitive to overfilling fwiw.

Frank@AutoSpeed 01-31-2007 12:45 PM

True

also says it is very sensitive to overfilling

S4gasm (LoTR) 01-31-2007 12:48 PM

well thats good to know.

S4_Cinci (I S'edTFA) 01-31-2007 05:38 PM

Hmmm............that is for the 01A tranny, we have the 01E. Likely different fill capacity.
