Default Random newbie-ish questions...

Can you feel the gears grind in the S4? I've never felt it, but I know for a fact I've done it before when I was learning on my uncle's beat up VW fox and rabbit.

Also, how do you know if you have synchro problems? What are tell tale symptoms?

I remember someone saying that we have a self-adjusting clutch... how do I know when I need to have it replaced... short of waiting until I can't shift anymore.

1. no you shouldn't hear the gears grinding unless you don't know how to drive a stick very well, however if you do and it's not just your technique then you may have synchro problems

2 symptoms of bad synchros are usually eveident in an inablity to get in or out of 2nd gear and will usually, but not always spread to other gears

3. the clutch is self-adjusting in that it is hydralic, but i've also heard that it has some sort of ratching self-adjustment to compensate for normal clutch disk wear. An easy way to tell if your clutch is slipping, is to accelerate in a higher gear going up hill. if the revs rise without a corresponding increase in speed, then you will know.

do you have any problems now or were you just asking?

Default Oh hehe no problems yet (just 1.5 months old), just looking for warning ahead of time..

and no I don't hear the gears grind or anything, I was just wondering if it'd be the same as any normal car ... like if ground the gears.. I'd know it.. bad bad bad sound and the stick would vibrate like hell... Thanks for the answers though! Very usefull to know.
