I wanted to know if it was really neccessary to purchase the Tip chip? Did it improve your 0-60 and 1/4 mile times?

Default yes and no..

the tough thing is SOME people have posted that they didn't notice a big difference in the shifting. With my 2000 it made a HUGE difference. I am not sure if this is a feel thing or a difference in the stock programming.

Not that significant in performance numbers because when you're WOT the stock shift program is really fast...what the chip basically does is make ALL the shifts that fast so you don't have the annoying dealy...ESPECIALLY downshifting.

Makes the car alot sportier but not something you'd notice that much in 0-60 or 1/4 mile runs.

Default Things I noticed...

It makes Tip more responsive. However, you wouldn't notice that much difference until you go back to stock tip chip. I don't know if this responsiveness adds any performance gain though.

Another thing I noticed is 'heat'. After switching back to stock tip chip, I noticed that gear box (the chrome panel especially) gets much hotter than before when I had GIAC tip chip in my car.

If you're running stock ECU, I don't think Tip chip is necessary. If you're chipped, maybe it's better to have Tip chip since GIAC claims Tip chip reduces the torque stress on Tip. They say 1.1 Bar ECU chip produces up to 360ft-lb torque which exceeds the maximum torque capacity of S4's Tip transmission.

Default There is a difference

In some ways subtle, in other ways not.

Okay, that's vague. I first installed the GIAC engine chip. Definite sense of new power, but I would say the trans felt less smooth in shifting now.

Then installed the GIAC trans chip ("race" version). Feels much better. More responsive. Smooth again, and more responsive shifting both up shifts and downshifts.

My bottom line opinion: a recommended upgrade if you install an engine chip.

Default I've never done GIAC ECU chip without Tip chip...

Sounds interesting. I'll try that someday.

Default Another Q for Tiptronic owners who have had the GIAC Tip chip...

When you're in 5th gear (in manual tip mode) and you floor it (without depressing kick down mode), does your transmission switch back and forth between 5th and 4th gear? I think this typically occurs between 55mph and 75 mph.
