Default Rear bearings gone at 40,000

This is the first real problem I have had with my 2000 S4. Anyone else hear of bearings going this early? I just put new GoodYear F1's on it, I guess the old SO3's were so loud I didn't notice the wineing coming from the rear at speeds over 60MPH. I had dealer look at it and they stated right rear wheel bearings need to be replace. Should I replace both right and left rear bearings now? I really thought it was the rear differential so I guess I should consider myself lucky. Any way would love to hear from any others who have had to replace them and also if I should have both done. Dealer is quoting 340.00 per wheel. Thanks

i had mine go at about 40k as well, it was just after the winter and i thought that my snow tire were noisy untill i put my 19z on when i bolted then on the rear wheels wiggled about 1/2in soon after that the front bearings went so i have replaced all of them now the car has 50k on it and the rear left is junk again, i would replace them together because the other will probably go bad right after

Default We offer rear wheel bearing kits (more).........

We have done many rear wheel bearings in our service department on S4/A4's with close to the same mileage so it is quite common.<ul><li><a href="http://www.ecstuning.com/stage/edpd/pagebuild_v2.cgi?make=Audi&amp;engine=2.7T&amp;mod el=B5%20S4&amp;submodel=Sedan&amp;category=Drivetr ain">ECS S4 drivetrain page.</a></li></ul>

Default seems steep.......

its @275 per wheel at my shop. My 2000 has @33k now, and the right rear is getting a little noisy. As soon as road salt season is over i'll have to replace it.

i did them my self so i think the bearings from the dealer cost me about 58 for the back and maybe 75 for the front, if you are going to buy aftermarket make sure it has a warranty all audi parts carry 1 year/ 12k miles so the will replace the rear for me for free

Default Shouldn't they be under warranty???

It's not like that's a NORMAL wear item, wtf. Most people never replace a wheelbearing in the time they own a car.

I just had a right rear wheel bearing replaced under warranty at 41,000 miles on my 2001 S4 at Sewickley Motorcars in Sewickley, PA. Same sound at about 20-40 mph. Tell your service person it is definitely a warranty item.
