Repost...in regards to my ghetto exhaust setup. =)
My theory is that 3" is too big and won't help you gain much power. 2.75" would have been ideal but I wanted to try stock 2.5" piping first. So I opted to use the stock exhaust, cut out the resonator weld a pipe in place and use the end piece of a Scorpian exhaust. Call me ghetto if you want, i don't care. Its a bit louder, yet not too obtrusive, than my old Borla/Neuspeed exhaust during idle or cruising but pretty damn quiet on the freeway which is what I want. I'm running piggie pipes as well and @ WOT my car sounds pretty damn mean with a throaty note. My torque is still there and definitely better up top (FATS test confirmed this - shaved off nearly half second, 0.4 to be exact) I like to think that if two cars were racing in a quarter mile, 0.2 seconds faster gives you a bit more than half a car length on the other car (anyone have comments on this assumption?) I'll be doing DYNO testing on this as well this weekend however Dyno numbers might be skewed a bit since i'll be comparing from another dyno day. Sound clip will be up tonight.

Not sure how you got a "thoaty" sound out of the stock exhaust...
I had a modified stock exhaust on my avant at one point and it sounded a little raspy.
I have a video clip if somebody would care to host it.

I'm sure you're setup was not the same exact as mine...anyway, email the file to me...
everyone has different views of throaty so we'll compare after I get a sound clip up.
