RS4 fuel pump versus stock fuel pump pictures and install tips

If you want to know how to remove the pump, it's inside the trunk, underneath the carpet and a black, circular disc with 3 phillips head screws. Take the disc off, then disconnect the connector by pulling straight up. Then, remove the fuel feed and return lines (be sure to relieve the pressure in the fuel system first). You can relieve the pressure by cranking the car with fuse #28 removed (fuel pump)...or, just disconnect that connector and crank the car over and let it die.

Then, you're going to need to spin that plastic retainer ring off the outside of the pump. Just take a big screwdriver and a hammer and go at it. It's a normal right hand thread. Just place the screwdriver on one of the nubs, then hit it with the hammer. Keep doin that til it's loose. Don't slip. The fuel tank is RIGHT there ;). Don't ruin the nubs.

After that's off, the pump lifts right out (it's sealed with a big rubber o-ring. Disconnect the black electrical connector from the pump. Disconnect the fuel return line from the pump (small flathead screwdriver may help here). After that, time to remove the pump from the holder in the tank. You can use a special too, which i don't have, or, you can take a short box wrench and get it between two of the slots on the base of the pump and twist it left.

After the pump is loose, it pulls right out. Be sure to get the lines out of the way before you pull it out and don't break the float for the fuel level. Install is reverse of removal. It's a good idea to make yourself a thin, plastic guide to push the lines out of the way as you drop the new pump in. Also, mark the pump above the locking slots (around those top cutouts where you put the wrench) so that you can align the pump properly. Be sure to note the orientation of the old pump before you pull it out.

The RS4 pump needs to have the extra line plugged or else the car will not run. I don't know the flow rate on that pump. I'm sure it can be used as a stock S4 replacement though. It doesn't use that cheesy debris sock like the standard s4 does.

Some other tips....

wear gloves
get good ventilation
keep any loose parts away from the tank's hole

see the extra line on the left of this rs4 pump? it needs to be plugged

Mike@VAST 01-03-2003 06:41 PM

i have no idea what the specs are...i just installed it...but, you gotta figure....if the

rs4 injectors they are supplying are ~480 cc/minute and there's 6 of 'em...at around 4 bar base before boost, you're talking a needed feed of 2880 cc/min, or, 2.88 litres per minute. if someone can clarify the rs4 injector rates @ X pressure, that would be nice
