Default S03 Pole Position Question

I have a '01 S4 with stock Avus rims and Pirelli P6000s which are worn and noisy as hell. I've gotten 23K miles out of them and am looking to upgrade to a better all around tire - not looking to race the car, but want a tire that will perform reasonably well in wet and dry conditions, and will last longer than the Pirellis. Everyone has good things to say about the Bridgestone S03s - how about tire size recommendations, expected longevity? Input is appreciated! Thanks.

Default Good wet and dry weather handling. Quieter than my old RE040's. Can't speak to the longevity

issue however since I never had Pirelli's. Things I have read suggest that the S03's may wear a little quickly, but that probably depends on how you use them. I have around 10K on mine including at least 5 track events.

I will certainly buy another set when these are too worn.....

Default mmmmm......sticky.

So3 is much nicer tire than the P6000. In my experience with them wet and dry traction is far better than the Pirellis. I felt the ride is a bit harsher than with the Pirelli's, but that was expected with ultra high performance tires. I have stock size 225/45/17, but they tend to be physically wider than some other brands of the same spec. Don't know anything about longevity yet, but treadwear is rated at 220 compared to Pirelli's 180, so you personally might expect to get about 28k miles based on the mileage you got out of the Pirellis.

Just be sure to get snow tires if you live anywhere it snows, because I'm sure the rubber compound isn't happy in freezing weather.

Default Phil......

The S03's are a great tire. I replaced my Pirelli's at 24k, and I am very impressed with the S03's. The noise factor is really reduced (especially when doing hard cornering)...and the wet traction is excellent.

Overall, the best tire for the buck out there for everyday performance driving.

Default S03 is great in wet

Dunlop SP9000 is another choice, or Toyo T1-S

Default I'm going through the same process

My Pilot Sports are almost to the wear bars at 23K. I want to replace them soon because I don't feel confident with them in the rain anymore.

I found that the tire rack website has a great section for reviews, where people write in to tell their impressions. You can even detail the search to show only reviews for Audis for that type of tire. I've been using it to check out the different tires. Click on "Reviews" for the tire you want to see feedback on.

FWIW, I like the Pilots, though, like all high performance tires, they wear pretty quickly. Also, they're pretty noisy - have been for quite a while. I run them on the high-side to "improve" the wear - 38-40 psi - so they ride stiff, too. Overall a very good tire for what they are.

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/

Default The S03 tread rating is only 220, isn't it?

If you are looking for long wear you might want something else with a rating around 340 or so.

Default 21K mi on my SO3s, 1-2K left, will probably replace them with same...

...because I like their performance wet and dry, they're not too noisy, and lots of people on this forum like them. They have enough ride comfort for me, too; I'm 57 and don't like things TOO harsh.

Default True, but 340 is a little high for a perf. tire...maybe 280 would be the high end for stock size.

340 might be for all-season tires if that's the route you want to go.

Default Not much to complain about with the S-03 ...

.
Nitpicking, the S-03's on my S8 hit 240 oF tread temperatures on the track. At that point, they're getting greasy.

My next tire, x-post
