talked to some of my favorite porsche/audi technicians the other day. They had just been trained on the S4. A couple of concerns-- I was worried that the S4 suspension would be too soft & the brakes inadequate. They assured me the brakes are awesome- 4 piston calipers- rotors similar to A8.

What the technicians were worried about was all of the time and emphasis Audi put into the training as "how to remove the s4 engine" and recommending that the disassembly be videotaped since once the engine is removed that it may be a "long time" before the engine gets re-installed, and that having a video would help the technician "remeber how the engine goes back in the car"

Smells like the S4 has been the victom of problems. Severe ones if it dictates removal of the engine.

Any info on s4 reliability? Europe has had the car for a year now-- feedback from s4 owners please-- my s4 is due in a month.

Is that the original S4s had problems with exhaust manifolds...I understand they were
redesigned, to some extent, and additional heat shields were added. This I heard
from an S4 owner in the UK, that had a 98 S4...and then got a 99 S4 (euro-spec). His
first one was in an accident, I believe.

One other comment is that it may be difficult to reach the turbos without removing the
engine. In case you don't know, the turbos are a matched set...they were checked out
against each other before installing in the car. If you blow one turbo, you need to
replace both of them to get the proper matching. This "may" be a reason why they
just take out the engine..it may be easier to work on.
