S4 not using much oil for new engine!
 

Now have just over 3400 miles on my new S4. Initially checked oil level after 2000 miles, and it was down about a cup. Did not add any at that time. Checked it today, and was down a total of only a pint after the first 3400 miles. I did add that pint, but am really pleased how well this engine has broken in. Am also getting around 27mpg average with every tank now. Thanks Audi for this great design! It loves the Colorado mountains.

Really, my mileage has sucked so far, averaging only about 17 mpg with about 1,000 total miles. Will it improve? (no, I don't have a heavy foot)

I'm only getting about 19-20 mpg, with 1,400 miles. Did yours improve as you got the miles on it or did you always get 27?

A6 2.7T (same engine) good on oil too!
 

My engine used maybe a pint in the first 1500 miles. I misread the dipstick (due to Audi's odd design), and added a half quart. So, it is slightly overfilled.

Anyway, I have 3500 miles on now, and it hasn't used ANY additional oil. I am very happy.

This after the dealer told me "these turbos burn a little oil" and a friend told me his A4 (12V 2.8) burns a quart every 3K miles.

I think the engine is opening up a little too. I was passing uphill and I barely touched the pedal. The engine didn't rev up much at all (3k at most). The car was at 90mph in no time. This didn't happen in my car before, and this pass was at 5,000ft above sea level! I haven't noticed any change at lower speeds.

Gas mileage still stinks except on the highway.

It's the variation in oil consumption that is disconcerting.

Improved after first tank. Mostly due to learning to use 6th gear sooner than anticipated.

Is yours Tip or 6 speed?
 

If you have a manual transmission, shift into 6th gear much sooner than you would do with a "normal" engine, because of the very strong, low rpm torque available. I find myself going through the mountains (up hill) in 6th!! My Wife's A6 2.8 Tip requires 3rd gear for the same road. My 4.0 Jeep (5 speed) also needs to use 3rd. The result is low fuel consumption. Try it; you may enjoy the difference. The car still pulls really well in 6th.

High altitude (I live at 8500 ft elevation) also helps lower the gas consumption--I know that does not sound correct. But, with less air to use for combustion the fuel system provides less fuel per mile--unless you are on turbo boost. So for half throttle or less, power is down at altitude but mileage is up. Also, less air means less drag, which means less energy is required to move the vehicle. Any way, it seems to work well for me.

For reference, my wife gets about 22.5 mpg in here 1998 A6 Quattro (Tip 2.8).
