S4 Tiptronic Shfting

S4 Tiptronic Shfting
My 2001 S4 Tiptronic seems to clunk very heavily between gears at around 10 mph. This clunk ony happens between downshifts. it seems that the car doesn't get in gear quick enough, when I hit the gas it clunks in gear. I've been told this is "normal" the dealer even changed the control module and it still shifts the same way. can anyone confirm this as being normal on a $45,000 car!

I have had some bad shifts too... but it never happens when I am in tiptronic mode. (a bit long...)
Is this normal for a $45,000 car? Well, no and yes. "No" from the standpoint of how much money we have put into this car and how long Tiptronic has been out. In many ways, this car should be closer to perfection than anything else Audi offers. One might think that given all of the vehicles which are now equipped with one form or another of the Tip that all the kinks would be worked out.
"Yes", on the other hand, since this is the first pairing of the 2.7T engine with the Tiptronic transmission. My understanding is that this trany can't handle much more hp than the 2.7T puts out (and the Multitronic can't even handle all that yet), so Audi probably made some conservative programming assumptions that could yield these occasional--and unfortunate--bad shifts.
Knowing what I do about software engineering and the unbelievably complex task it is to write real-time control code, I am completely amazed that the whole thing works as well as it does. And given the deep integration of the Tip into almost all of the car's systems, I'm back to thinking that an occasional bad shift shouldn't bother me given the impressive performance the other 99% of the time.
This is, of course, just my humble opinion. And, btw, I haven't chipped my car.

Hmmm, I thought this "clunk" sound was in part due to the
adaptive shift program getting caught in a moment of indecision. In other words, you drive aggressively for a few minutes or even for a short distance. Then you encounter traffic or some other slowdown and/or stop and/or part throttle coast.
The interpretation of which mode you desire conflicts momentarily and then it hesitates the down shift thinking you are going to accelerate on the edge of the powerband for that gear. You don't and the resultant clunk is the kickdown mismatched with engine speed.
It only happens occasionaly and you should be able to reproduce on demand after some practice. My .02 minus .01 to the question.

If true, this would make Audi's choice of gear ratio rather strange. First
gear is geared pretty aggressively (same as for the manual I believe), so if
the transmission is marginal...
