S4Avant Ride Hight or Wrong OEM Springs
Greetings:
I am not a regular member, so please excuse me if this is an obvious known issue.
I am concened that my 2001 S4Avant has the incorrect front springs and I was hoping someone could confirm the correct identification for the OEM units (ie: paint markings).
When looking at our S4 Avant the gap between the the wheel arch and the wheel is 1.25" taller in the front as compared to the rear. Plus the suspension is not as firm as I seem to remeber the S4 sedan I test drove before buying our car last September. I had not really noticed it this winter with the snow tires on since I attributed the sloppy handling to sidewall flex. But now with the Arvus wheels back on I am still concerned particularly with the jacked front look.
It is visibly higher than other S4 sedans I see around. Can anyone speak to this?

Re: kinda sounds like a blown strut..i have heard of that happening here and there
really. But how would a blown strut account for increased ride height?
How about maybe the wrong stut oned for a A4 with increased ride height. Then they could be wrong AND blown.
I seem to remember the struts being red. Does that help?

My stock struts are dark red. Here's a picture of mine with the OEM red struts in.

The height may be ok, but the bouncyness sounds like a blown strut. I just went through that with a set of blown front Koni struts. I had to put on new Konis to fix the problem. The ride height was the same with the blown and new Konis, but the ride stiffness was night and day.

learn how to spell...well a bad strut ( not stut) can add more ride height due to the bad strut
or uneven height due to it not compressing, it happened to me from the oem (boge struts).

not unless it's jammed
a blown strut will not increase ride height unless the shaft is jammed, in which case he'd have anything but a soft ride.
dampers very rarely have any impact on ride height at all, with the exception of high pressure units like Bilsteins that actually raise the car a bit (have in 4/4 of the installs I've done so far).

Avant ride height.
we've got 2 S4s, both 6spd, one Avant & one Sedan. Both w/stock suspension.
The avant definitely has a bunch of fender well gap in front, but a quick eyeball has it at exactly the same height as the Sedan. I think the tail-heavy "look" exacerbates the drag-butt looks.
One difference I have noticed is that the damping seems weaker on the front suspension of the Avant. Tends to bob a bit more when driven hard.
I've got Bilsteins sitting in the garage that should allow me to lower the car slightly (adjustable spring-clip perches), and tighten up the damping.

Re: well my front struts wore out and the front rose a 3/4 inch before i fixed it.
Was there a TSB or recall on this issue? How did you actually validate the shock was blown. Did you remove it and see oil leaking around the seals? Did you work with the dealer on this issue and claim it under warranty?
My S4A goes in for its 5k service on Monday. I am trying to figure out how to raise the issue in a manner that will have them fix this issue.
