Shifter linkage problems? Wife calls and tells me that the Allroad won't go into 1, 2, or 3 gears

Shifter linkage problems? Wife calls and tells me that the Allroad won't go into 1, 2, or 3 gears
but the rest are fine. She backed up the big hill to our house becasue she couldn't pull the steep hill in 4th. 
I get the shifer to go into 1st, 2nd and 3rd but there is def something going on. 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th and reverse are buttery smooth but there is soemthing going on in 1st and 2nd.
I adjusted the shorshifer and it is somewhat better but 1st gear is still "catching" when going in or going to 2nd.
Any ideas? I thought I was goign to need a tranny but I think it is fine. Any ideas?
