Short of hypnotism (or battery disconnect), how do I make the ECM forget?
I want the ECM in my bride's 4.2 to get amnesia, so as to study the result of a "This is the first day of the rest of your life." type of electronic epiphany. Can I accomplish this by yanking any (or all three) of the fuses that Audi designates as relating to "engine timing"?
If not, I assume I can physically disconnect the ECM without worrying about electrical rancor.
Is there a need to keep the ECM "dead" for some minimum period of time in order to assure it forgets?
I've asked the question over in the A6 forum, and someone mentioned that it would be better to post the question over here, where folks are more used to diving into such things. I've perceived a minor dropoff in performance and mileage after an initial increase with a PES-installed GIAC chip, and want to see if the ECM has been pulling timing back, etc. as a result of seeing incipient ping a few too many times.
Thanks in advance.

Doing a throttle adaptation will clear all learned values in the ECU.
Which is what you want, I believe
Find someone with a VAG-COM and perform the throttle adaptation (measuring block 060, then click basic settings)

Actually, there is a very little known way -
Using the vag-com setup, go to the engine section, and enter "000" for the group - it will pull up ten values. Then do a "switch to basic settings". That will "unlearn" all the adaptations that have occured.
