Simple question: Why turbos making a whining noise when they are cold?
I noticed that my turbos got louder esp when oil is cold. When oil temp gets normal, the sound fades away. So I just was wondering is it because oil is cold or bearings are cold or there is some other reason...
Thanks!
Thanks!

IMHO...it "may" ...I said "may" be the turbo bearings going out
Depends on the sound...BTW, I have already had turbos replaced on my 2000 S4 sedan...and have a loud siren sound on my 2001 S4 Avant.

I think I'm having a "normal" sound. I had a similar sound in my '00 S4, and turbos were fine...
I know that this sound could be the first symptom of turbo failure, but I'm trying to be an optimist here...

along the same lines - i have been recently getting this loud whining sound (more)
primarly when i sorta"push" the car. It doesnt really sound like a siren - but it has been getting louder and louder. It really whiles loudly when going up a very steep hill at like 40-60mph.
Ive had my dealer check the turbo system and they say everything is "within factory specs" My car has just over 11000 miles BTW.
IT THIS NORMAL? or should i worry about it more

So should you have *any* sounds from the turbos at all?
Our S4 Avant is barely 2 months old and I've always heard a faint "whistle," sort of high-pitched that gets drowned out by the sound of the car, tires, engine, wind, etc. It always sounds the same and I can only really hear it when I get going from a toll booth or tunnel -- where there's something for the noise to bounce off. Sounds cool! My wife thinks I'm crazy when I make stupid turbo noises while driving the S4!

IMO, it is completely normal to hear a whining sound from the turbos... (m)
When cold, there is probably more friction in the turbo bearings, which can make more noise. It is generally a good idea to let the car (including the turbos) warm up before driving too hard...

Yes, all turbo'd cars have a whine that you can hear, but only in enclosed areas..
like parking garages where the sound is bounced back to you. Other than that specific situation, I've never heard it. My friends have and love it.

I would agree
Mine whined and poped then on my new one they whined and the dealer replaced them. You may want to check the boost pressure with a VAG, mine were not producing enough boost when the dealer tested them.
