For the record, AA can easily be recoded to L box.<ul><li><a href="http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&amp;item=7951632278&amp;rd= 1&amp;sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT">closed ebay auction</a></li></ul>

Default Any idea how the recoding is done or if it can be done

by accident somehow?

Default Here is my experience....

I had 2 chipped ECUs for my car. I traded one of the chipped ECU's for a stock ECU. Both of my ECU's were L-box. The stock ECU was an AA-box. I took the soft coding from the L box and recoded the AA with those values. The new AA-box works perfectly on my L-box car. Even my service guy says there are interchangeable. I can't remember the actual numbers. But if you have a working L box, use the VAG to get the coding numbers. Then install the AA box and use the recode to change the value to the same as the L box.

Same concept as the tip tranny recode to hold first gear.

Default well, thing is i know they are interchangeable, but ddont' know

what coding numbers you speak or if ite necesary to do a recode for it to work. I had a brand new AA box chipped by AMS (for use in my Lbox car) a long time ago. I never checked what the coding was. I did a swap with a guy about a year ago who had a GIAC L-box just to test out the difference between the two chips(btw he ran his fastest strip time with my ECU!). When I got my ECU back it read L-box on the VAG COM. I am pretty sure it read AA box before hand, but couldn't remember if I had ever verified that. I do know its the same physical ECU box. Just wondering if AMS had recoded to Lbox prior to shipment to me or if it had somehow accidently been done by my freind.

Default I don't remember if it changed the part number, or just the coding. Do you want me check?

It will take until tonight for me to do the swap and read. My VAG and AA-box are at home.

Default Its not critical, just whenever you get around to it is fine

I know mine now reads an L-box (the part nubmer ends with L when you go to engine module in VAG). Its for my own curiosity pretty much. Thanks!

WindyCityS4,

I am looking at a similar issue...I have an L-box and would like to buy an AA-box used ECU. Did you ever figure out if both worked interchangeably?

Thanks!
