Squeaking noise while turning

Hello,

I have a 2001 S4. Whenever I turn the steering wheel all the way to one side or the other, then drive either forward or backward at slow speeds, I hear this steady, high-pitched, very embarassing squeaking noise coming from the front end.

I brought it to a mechanic and he didn't know what the problem was.

This happens whenever I parallel park or do a complete U-turn.

Does anyone know what this could be? Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Check PS fluid level, but 1st STFA

Does it do it while you're slightly braking around turns as well, or only at full steering lock?

If you're turning from lock to lock, that's pretty normal. It's bad for the steering pump to turn

the steering wheel all the way in either direction. Try to avoid that as much as possible.

You can also replace the PS fluid if it hasn't been replaced in a long time. That helps.

check the control arm bushing...

NYImola: Thanks for being nice.

SSTIPJason::Free JD: It does not make this noise while braking around turns, only while going very slow, and at 90-100 percent steering lock.

Kanahootie: I just searched 'control arm bushing' and read that drilling into the bushing and injecting grease into the joint could fix this problem. Do you have any experience doing this?

All: Thanks a lot for your help.

Does it still do this with the environmental controls *off*?

If so, I can't help you.

But if that noise stops when you turn off the heat/AC, ask someone to sit in the passenger seat as you drive around, drop the glovebox, and have them see if the squeaking is coming from behind there. If it is, then that's the blower fan squealing. All you need to do is pull it out and lubricate the squirrel cage spindle bushings with some 3-in-1 oil. Search for some of these key words and you'll find other posts talking about it.

Either way, good luck.

More info, if it does turn out to be the blower fan...
