Stasis LSD-rear differential and center differential.....

Someone please explain to me the advantages of these. I somewhat understand, but would like to have a better understanding. I'm contemplating the center differential. I'd imagine it could be quite helpful out on the track.

http://www.stasisengineering.com/audi_s4_b5_diff.html</a

Captain Matt, I be 05-23-2005 09:23 AM

plus its cheap, considering the cost of most mods for our cars.

PSmalls::DoggieStyle 05-23-2005 09:24 AM

Exactly, and very easy to install from what I'm told.

in brief, only cause the search sucks...

...center differential. Under Acceleration, increases the amount of torque that can be sent front or rear when required. Think of the Torsen like a Torque Multiplier. The stock Torque Multiplier is 2:1. The stasis Torque-Multiplier is 4 or 5 :1.

The rear lsd is a clutch type limited slip differential. It replaces an open. When one side tries to spin more then the other side, the lsd locks up. How aggressive that is, and to what degree is defined by the number of plates, preload, and ramp angle. But for this thread, just know that when one wheel starts to spin, the lsd forces the other wheel to spin at the same speed.

So as long as one of the two rear wheels has grip, your torque will not be wasted. The caveat to that is assuming you do not have enough torque to overpower your rear tires assuming traction on at least one.

Okay, I thought there was more to it than that. Thanks, Ryan.

The problem I am trying to eliminate is power loss (throttle cut?) when going into a turn and traction control kicks in. Would a center diff, which would be able to distrbute more torque to the rear, alleviate this problem? I would think so based on what I've read, but just want some confirmation.

center yes, rear no, apparently.

Pat-SoCal 05-23-2005 09:33 AM

The rear diff. is priceless! The center is a wash.

The rear diff. is a must if you plan on doing any kind of semi-serious track driving or [semi]competitive road racing. Even a KO3 car with a chip will spit power out of the inside rear tire on a slow corner if the driver is getting his money's worth out of the car. There are cheaper alternatives to the stasis rear diff., but it's damn hard to beat a proven drop-in replacement despite the heavy pricetag.

I'm not sold on the center diff. I can sort of see the advantages, but if the car is well balanced and the chassis is sorted, it is my belief that the driver should want to go the other way with the ratios... I'll be exploring this further with a spare transmission and center diff. Marc at AMS is going to lock the center diff. for me and we'll see how it goes.

lsd will fix edl and *some* TC

lsd + esp off is the win.

JUST got my lsd last week, its freaking amazing.

PSmalls::DoggieStyle 05-23-2005 09:34 AM

Yeah, we were talking center, I assumed, based on the "cheap" comment.

nyet 05-23-2005 09:36 AM

like pat, im not convinced the center does that much for you

but the LSD vs EDL is night and day

ymmv, im 100% track noob
