Default Steering rack and tie rod ends

I decided to tackle my sons A4. The rack has been leaking for quite a while now and I got a used rack from Shokan. They test them and warranty them for six months. The cost is very attractive compared to a new one. I was hoping to get an indy to do the install, one said no and he is a VDub/Audi only shop. Another quota us $900, which included fluids and alignment. That seemed awfully high to me. I read the tech article here and pulled it myself. It's not that bad but another set of hands is a must to get those bango bolts out. The TREs were shot already and I just put those in less than a year ago. Do the TREs go that fast? The car is a 97 2.8 Thanks - John
