Default Tell me about the coolant temp sensor...

A while back, I had a intermitant DTC that said "usually coolant temp sensor or (something else)".

I recall others mentioning this sensor as a possible item to investigate when other problems exist.

So, please tell me what you know about this part. How does it's data affect the car's systems? If it fails, what are the likely symptoms? I can see how a failed MAF can cause a too lean or too rich condition, so what's the equivalent when this part fails? Where's it located? What's the part number? etc, etc.

I haven't seen the DTC again, but it's sitting in the back of my mind as something to possibly swap.

Thanks,

Default When it reads cold, the ECU will adjust to let the car run a little rich.

If your car is already warmed up, that will cost you a few horsies. That's the theory.

It's located back behind the engine, dead center in your engine bay, next to the secondary firewall. I think you have to remove the tube that runs into the Y pipe to get to it.

If it reads really cold on a hot day, the car will belch black smoke and be very hard to start.

Default That part failed on my wife's VW Beetle Turbo.

Car had trouble starting (or would not start at all) on warm to hot days. Started just fine if it was a bit cooler. For example, the car would start right up in the morning, but if we went out to lunch, it would have trouble starting up.

Car seemed to run okay once it got started though.

Back in 2000-01, yeah. It's cheap ($4-5) now.
